Precision Metal Works Ltd. builds target chamber for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore California recently commissioned Mactaquac based Precision Metal Works Ltd. (PMW) to build one of the key components of their Titan laser system. This new, short-pulse laser will open up a whole new world of research following the ground-breaking capabilities of the former Nova petawatt laser. The Nova laser (which was housed at LLNL) was the biggest laser in the world before the NIF (National Ignition Facility) was built at Livermore National Laboratory.

When complete, Titan will be the Laboratory’s first combined long-pulse and ultra-short-pulse laser. It is one of only three petawatt-class lasers in the world. The others are in the United Kingdom and Japan.

This is not the first project PMW has completed for the prestigious US laboratory. “Nor is it the last” says PMW President David Rioux. “We have received recent orders from the Laboratory though they are of lesser magnitude than this complex project. This indicates to me that the Laboratory likes what it sees in our organisation.”

Precision Metal Works Ltd. is breaking into a number of new markets – and appears to be becoming a darling of US based National Laboratories if their recent successes with the University of Rochester Laser Laboratory and Oakridge National Laboratory are any indication.

“I think they like working with us” says company President, David Rioux. “We are flexible, professional and do our best to deliver a quality product on time”. Perhaps that is the reason for the phenomenal growth PMW has experienced lately.

Precision Metal Works Ltd. is thrilled to have been selected to work with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory on this project and hopes that this is just one of many interesting projects they will work with the Laboratory on.

Founded in 1952, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is a national security laboratory, with a mission to ensure national security and apply science and technology to the important issues of our time. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.
